Celius Queen Bent

Celius Queen Bent
Celius, like Teddy, appears to have a direct pipeline into the Danish collective unconscious. He is able to create forms which are at the same time fresh and daring, yet somehow deeply resonant and familiar, like the images in a dream. We can best understand this pipe by considering it as the seamless union of two shapes: the vertical bowl and the transverse shank, the latter passing entirely beneath and beyond the bowl and flaring out to form a kind of inverted adze blade. The bowl is a tall, graceful cylinder, with natural plateaux top, and surrounded by dense straight grain. The shank is curved and tapered, emerging smoothly from the heel fore and aft; its overall length perfectly counterbalances the visual size and weight of the bowl. As always, it is fitted with one of Celius's favorite handcut taper bits, with lathe-turned ornament and faceted shaft, with a slightly rounded lip.

The only fault I can find, and that which presumably made it a Queen rather than a King, is that the grain tapers off slightly at the bottom on the obverse side. But this hardly distracts from the wondeful quality of execution, superb engineering and excellent color, nor from the surprisingly comfortable way the pipe nestles into the hand. The condition is excellent.
