Viggo Nielsen Danish Axe
Until his recent death, Viggo was the oldest living Danish carver, who got his start at the very end of the War. He was not a part of the more famous Copenhagen scene, having worked entirely in Funen, the large island at the southern tip of Denmark. Yet he was well known and highly respected by the other carvers, and his son Kai has carried on in his footsteps. This is one of his characteristic shapes, one that bears some resemblance to Celius pipes, but is bolder and more masculine. It is cut from an astounding piece of Corsican briar, and has the ruddy brown color characteristic of this wood. It has a large, thick walled bowl that converges to a point and a nicely tapered shank to which a handcut fantail mouthpiece is fitted. Viggo's pipes are destined to be regarded as Danish classics, and with good reason.
