During the Lane era, both grading and size designation became a bit arbitrary; but there is nothing arbitrary about the "Extra Large" marking on this pipe. It is a very imposing piece, not just because of its physical dimensions, but also because of the superb straight grain coverage. It's hard to see why it was graded as a Distinction rather than as a Selected, except that it has the dark under-stain of this designation, presumably because of some minor variations in color of the briar. But that aside, it's a first rate pipe, in outstanding condition. It appears that the CP on the bit has been restamped, and is slightly out of alignment. But this is a trifle on such a piece.
