Normally we would assume that any pipe with a Double Comfort bit must be from the Lane period. But in fact, this bit pre-dates Lane's acquisition of the company, and was introduced shortly after the end of the War. We know that this pipe dates from that interim period because of the French Red stain, the absence of the Lane "L", and the purely classical shape. Thus we have a pipe that would be hard to improve upon. The shape is notably elegant and well-balanced, the grain dense and symmetrical, and the quality of execution impeccable. Apparently, the former owner agreed, and smoked the pipe but seldom and carefully. As a result, it would be hard to distinguish from new.
