Celius "Fantasy" Bent Sitter
The genius of Celius is such that every one of his freehands offers a lesson in the art of cutting briar. This pipe is a kind of polyphonic sonata of lines and curves. One notices immediately that it is a sitter, quite unusual for Celius. From the flat base, the bowl emerges at a rather dramatic angle, and has a slight curve on front and rear surfaces that emphasizes the thick plateaux rim. The shank's curves are even more dramatic, rising towards a kind of platform, again covered in natural plateaux, whose angle is essentially identical to that of the base. He has fitted it with one of his famous long-tenon, lathe-turned bits, which inflects slightly toward the lip, and whose length and delicacy compliment the rather angular bowl and complete the shape. At the same time, the grain is stunning, the color subtle and attractive, and the internal engineering first rate. The pipe appears unsmoked. It was a pleasure to restore and to offer to you.
