G.A.F. Amber Stemmed Meerschaum Billiard in Case

Price: $125.00

I can find no mention of the G.A.F. company that claims to have made this beguiling little long-stemmed meerschaum billiard. But it is clear from examination of the pipe itself that it is from around 1900-1920, and almost certainly of Viennese manufacture, though sold in the US. It is a pipe of no great pretensions, with no carving or decoration, yet made from very high grade stone, and with a fine fossil amber bit on a bone tenon with orific mouthpiece. It recommends itself by the simplicity and clarity of line, and by the fact that it was barely smoked by its previous owner. Its condition was apparently safeguarded by the custom made case, covered in fine-grained leather and lined with satin and velvet, albeit with a rather vulgar label attached to the interior.

It would make an excellent pipe for smoking delicate Virginias, and if smoked carefully and put away while still warm inside the case, would no doubt begin to color quite nicely. It is not the sort of pipe to clench in the teeth while chopping wood or working on your old Jaguar. But in the smoking chair, it could bring considerable pleasure to most pipe smokers.
