Steven Johnson Bent Pear/Bulldog

Price: $162.50

Steve Johnson was best known as the director of Dunhill's US operations until they closed all their retail stores a few years' back. He was also an avid pipe smoker and a talented semi-professional pipe maker, although he made rather few pieces. Here is one of the nicest I have seen.

It is clearly in the neoclassical genre, in a shape which I have called a calabash for want of a better term. It's very well proportioned, and skillfully cut from excellent briar, showing flame grain on one side and down the shank, and what Barling would have called "Guinea Grain" on the other. It has a notably stout, tapered shank whose lines are gracefully continued onto the nice taper bit.
It has good capacity, good engineering, and while it does not strike one forcefully across the face, it has considerable quiet charm, is comfortable in the mouth, of good size, and promises to be an excellent smoker for any sort of tobacco.
