Larsen "Super" Crosscut c. 1963 by Sven Knudsen

Price: $225.00

Sven introduced this shape for the famous 1963 Larsen Export catalog, which marked Larsen producing its own line of pipes rather than selling those made under the carver's name. I used to think that this shape was made for by Celius, as it is one of which the latter was most enamored and he did make pipes for Larsen, both under his own name and later under Larsen's; but further research has shown that Celius probably first saw it at the Surh Pipemageri while he was apprenticing under Sven. It's a very coherent, well balanced and original shape, another of what I call the "Danish classics," but somewhat difficult to describe. The bowl is an elongated Dublin, with a convex rim, but which drops far below the shank to form a distinctive rounded bottom. The tubular shank emerges from the back of the bowl with notable elegance and fluidity, and is fitted with a simple but notably attractive handcut saddle bit. It is somehow a "light hearted" pipe that doesn't take itself too seriously, one with echoes of Gert Holbek and Pipe Dan. This example is cut directly across the grain of the very high grade Corsican briar (hence the Super designation) and is lightly smoked and in excellent condition. There is a tiny bit of rounding of the shoulder of the bit at the shank from over-enthusiastic buffing, but the fit remains first rate. A fine pipe, and an excellent companion.
