Teddy's interest in the calabash shape seems to go back to his early days as a carver. While working for Larsen, he cut this most interesting example of the shape. It has a very generously sized bowl, with what I think is Mazur birch "cup" attached to the top, whose shape is precisely that of the classic calabash. The shank is curved and tapered, and rises to meet the handcut taper bit with a slight reverse-taper "godet" at the shank, adding to the gracefulness of the pipe.
The pipe richly deserves its Straight Grain 10 desigation, one tiny grade below the "Pearl," and could easilly have achieved that grade if old Ole Larsen had been in a better mood that day. It's in virtually pristine condition, and deserves your most serious consideration.
