Larsen "Super" Walrus Sandblast by Sven Knudsen c. 1963

Price: $325.00

Like his old friend and admirer Sixten Ivarsson, Sven's pipe design was inspired by natural forms. And while Sixten tended to look toward eggs, nuts, or even potato sacks (!), Sven seems to have looked towards birds and animals. Here is a very famous shape, one that was copied extensively and maintained in the Larsen catalog long after Sven's departure. It is very sinuous, with multiple curves from rim to lip. It's most characteristic feature is the pair of "flippers" at the heel. These are not merely decorative, for the allow the pipe to sit firmly upon the desk or table in two different positions--ether as shown, or leaned forward about 90 degrees, so it perches on the "nose" of the walrus. Thus it is an extremely practical pipe.

It was cut from a very high quality block of briar, apparent from the deep ring grain the encircles the bowl. Unlike most carvers of the era (with the notable exception of Sixten and Lars), Sven did all his own sandblasting, with excellent results. The finish is reminiscent of Dunhill's early Shells, with reddish highlights peeking through the dark walnut overstain.

The pipe is in excellent condition in all regards, with clean rim and bowl, unworn finish, and bit free bit. The nomenclature is a bit bleary, but fully readable. After curing for more than 50 years, this pipe should deliver notably dry, cool smokes, especially with Virginia tobacco, for which it is ideally suited.
