Pipe Dan Pipes

Pipe Dan was one of the most important retailers of pipes from the 1960's to the 1980's. They carried the work of many of the best artisanal carvers of the day, including Sven Knudsen, Sixten Ivarsson, Gert Holbek, Celius, Holtorp and many others. They made their own pipes, the famous "Shape Reformed" line, many of which were designed by Holbek, and executed by Loran, Tom Eltang, and others. They sold briar, vulcanite, pipe making tools, and served as a meeting place for carvers and pipe smokers alike. Thus, they played a pivotal role in the development of the modern Danish pipe. All pipes shown are pre-smoked, unless listed as unsmoked. The pre-smoked pipes have been cleaned, polished, reamed and sterilized, just as you would want to receive them.

Pipe Dan/Gert Holbek "Standard" Saddle Bit One of the classic Holbek "Shape Reformed" designs from the early Sixties, this pipe appears on Page 5 of the Pipe Dan Catalog. It is a somewhat unusual variation, with a nice "tan shell" sandblasted finish with saddle bit, and it was executed by Holbek himself, as we can tell from the bias-cut button. It is in first rate condition. |

Pipe Dan Freehand by Carlom c. 1970 Pipe Dan provided a retail outlet for many artisanal carvers, among whom is Carlom, about whom I know nothing. However, we can see from this pipe that he was quite expert in his execution, and imaginative in his design. It has a tall, well-grained, Dublin-esque bowl with plateaux top. It tapers down to the heel, which has a kind of foot or prow at the bottom. The shank is especially noteworthy in the fluidity with which it emerges from the bowl, and its elegant curved and tapered shape. The handcut bit shows interesting decorative turnings near the shank, and is faceted as it tapers and curves to the button. Exceptional condition in all regards. |

Holbek/Pipe Dan "Standard Half Bent" Pipes Called the "Standard Half Bent" shape in the 1961-62 Pipe Dan catalog, both these pipes were designed and carved by Gert Holbek, as can be determined from the angled mouthpiece button. They may be considered the classic Dan Pipe Shaped Reformed design, and are beautifully cut and executed. Here is an excellent example, a rather small pipe with excellent grain and color. Quality of execution is outstanding, and the pipe is in first rate condition in all regards. |
